 A Family Affair

The Kosofsky family has been in the second hand/consignment industry since the turn of the twentieth century.  To the left, is a picture of Simon Kosofsky (the gentleman with the beard) and his family standing outside his storefront on the lower east side of Manhattan in the late 1800’s.  His son Aaron, standing next to him, took the consignment business uptown when he opened Ritz Furs on 57th street in the 1940’s.  Aaron’s son Michael (the baby in the picture) started his own chapter in the family’s consignment story when he opened Michael’s, The Consignment Shop for Women, in 1954 on fashionable Madison Avenue on the upper east side.

Michael Kosof(sky) was a third-generation resale minded entrepreneur.  He was above all a stylish gentleman with impeccable taste. He believed that every woman can—and should—look like a million without spending a million.

Today, Michael’s daughter and granddaughter, Laura and Tammy, run Michael’s together.  With a combination of style and business savvy, Laura has led the family’s consignment story to new heights.  The story entered the twenty-first century with Tammy’s fresh perspective and youthful energy beginning in 2006.  Now a New York City institution, Michael’s proudly boasts generations of fashion expertise and serves as a model for high-end consignment stores all over the world.
