Just over a week from now marks the start of the much anticipated Tokyo Olympics. With an extra year of waiting for these events due to the pandemic, many of us are antsy to watch the passing of the torch, the flipping of the gymnasts, and the chart on our television screens adding up our country’s golds, silvers, and bronzes.

The competition, of course, does not stop at the athletic capability of each country. Like all televised events, there is an undeniable (although, unspoken) competition of the best dressed. For a (very) brief Olympic-fashion history: in 1976 the famed American designer Halston brought designer uniforms to the summer and winter games (both in the same year) with a sleeker design compared to the past's years of heavily patriotic looks. Ultimately, it was not exactly a favorable design with the American audiences.

While he may not have earned himself a permanent spot on the Olympics fashion design team, Halston set a precedent for the future of our top athletes being outfitted by style icons. Most notably, Ralph Lauren, who has been designing the opening and closing ceremony uniforms since 2008.

Ralph Lauren

Lauren, born in New York City in 1939, is an obvious choice to represent our country in fashion. Having served in the United States Army himself, and even utilizing red and blue as main brand colors, his simple and classic designs resonate with the American people.

Not everyone is one to dress in white polos and blue puffer jackets, we get it. Thankfully, Michael’s carries a full collection of Ralph Lauren pieces that can compliment any style. For an edgier look, this snakeskin belt is perfect, or if you’d like to add a pop of color that’s not red, white, or blue, this pink cable knit dress

And while we love our French brands like Hermes and our Italian friends at Brunello Cucinelli, Michael’s wants to highlight two more American designers in the spirit of the Olympics. Don’t worry, we still love all our designers equally…

A newer brand than some of the other’s we carry at Michael’s, but chic nonetheless, The Row is an American label started by none other than the infamous Olsen twins: Mary-Kate and Ashley. While they originally made a name for themselves on the American television screens, they have been making a stir in the fashion industry since 2006 with minimalist clothing fit for all people regardless of age and size.
