April 22nd every year marks Earth Day - a day where we recognize that our planet needs the help of its people to make smart decisions so we can maintain the beauty we live in.

At Michaels, we are avid Earth Day celebrators everyday! As a consignment store, we are constantly contributing to the sustainable fashion industry as we take in clothes that are no longer wanted by one woman, so they can find me home with the next!

Second-hand shopping allows for an item of clothing, a piece of jewelry, or a beautiful handbag to get a second, third or fourth life. With the rise of “fast fashion” companies, where clothing is made only to be worn for one season, at Michaels, we collect only high-end luxury pieces that are made to last.

By consigning with Michaels, not only can you make profit off of the clothes, shoes, and accessories you no longer wear, but you can also help the environment. You will be keeping clothing out of landfills in a way that will reduce emissions and pollution on our Earth. And, at Michaels, we take consignment (and sell consignment!) year round… Not just on Earth Day!

In honor of this special day, Michaels wants to highlight some of the three brands that are committed to sustainability.

Stella McCartney

Stella McCartney Burgundy Faux Leather Platform Boots

Stella McCartney is one of the best known luxury sustainable brands with their strong commitment to use of vegan leather and faux fur over real leather and real fur since the beginning.

As the company has progressed, all of the fabrics used have developed into sustainable versions, and the packaging of the brand is entirely recyclable. They also place a strong emphasis on respecting all workers on every level of the production chain to create a positive work environment.

Rag & Bone

Rag & Bone Taupe Suede Boots

Rag & Bone made a major move toward sustainability in 2007 when they launched “The denim recycling project.” Customers can discard unwanted or unfitted denim, and on the day of their donation, they will receive a 25% discount on full price denim items.

The denim donated is then turned into “denim insulation” to help build homes with over 40 Habitat to Humanity affiliates.

Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton has actively taken steps toward reducing their carbon footprint since 1994. They created their own sustainability sector LVMH’s Initiatives for The Environment (LIFE), with goals to move more toward eco-design and circular economy.

They have also partnered with organiztions that aid in the fighting of Amazon’s rainforest fires, as well as a partnership with Solar Impulse Foundation to support the production of renewable energy for their boutique use.

In 2020, Louis Vuitton released an eco-friendly collection made entirely of recycled resources titled the “Felt Line.” Their website highlights some of their greatest sustainability achievements here: https://us.louisvuitton.com/eng-us/magazine/articles/sustainability#

You can take part in sustainable style this Earth Day by shopping or consigning at Michaels! We are now accepting consignment for all spring, luxury fashion label pieces. Happy Earth Day!
