Designer Spotlight: Prada
Prada is one of the most distinct and sought after brands of the moment. With the recognizable upside down triangle logo and sleek clothing, the brand has remained high in popularity despite it being around for over 100 years. While we all know Prada bags well, how much do we know about Prada the company?
Prada opened in 1913 by Mario and Martino Prada in Milan, Italy, first as a leather goods company. By 1919, Prada became the Official Supplier of the Italian Royal House. Due to this, they were allowed to use the House of Savoy coat of arms and knotted rope design in their logo - thus, leading to Prada becoming strongly associated with Italian aristocracy.
The company truly began to flourish when Mario's granddaughter, Miuccia, joined the family business in the 1970s after her mother had taken over. She expanded the brand by designing more accessories. In 1979, she officially added footwear to the House of Prada with great success. This lead to the first womenswear line in the early 80s.
Miuccia and Patrizio Bertelli, the other half of the innovative Prada team, married in 1987 and went on to launch Miu Miu, Church's, Car Shoe, and Pasticceria Marchesi. Michaels is proud to carry Prada today.
